Conte returns to Chelsea training with a smile

ANTONIO CONTE faces the bizarre situation of taking his Chelsea squad for their first full day of training on Monday – even though he could be replaced by the end of the week.

Conte is back from holiday and against all the odds remains the head coach despite the fact his fellow Italian Maurizio Sarri is waiting to take over.

Chelsea are in talks to get Sarri released by his current club Napoli who in turn are waiting for him to resign.

Both clubs are haggling over the level of compensation – with some reports suggesting the Italian club are demanding £17.5million.

It means dead man walking Conte must fulfil the terms of his contract and oversee the first session of pre-season training today with everybody in limbo.

His brother Daniele posted a picture on Instagram yesterday of the coaches all lined up in Surrey on Saturday, but it is unclear if it was posted the same day.

Chelsea's players who did not play at the World Cup are all in for duty and that means David Luiz, Cesc Fabregas, Marco Alonso, Alvaro Morata, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Pedro will be among those on duty.

Conte returned from holiday on Saturday as those Chelsea players reporting for work underwent medical checks and fitness tests.

Daniele, who is on the coaching staff, posted the snap with the caption: "Come on Chelsea Come on Team Conte!!! Chelsea 2018-19."

Some reports claim Conte is set to return on Monday after spending time in Italy.
